Review Week 17

The author asks have you learned something?
I learned a more simpler way to understand serifs. Before I read that article, I thought an ascender was the serif.  He definitely helped me understand more clearly the different between all the parts and factors of the type. 

Review Week 16

How many points are in an inch? How many points are in a pica? 72 points in an inch, 12 points in a pica

Of the seven classifications, which classification(s) would best work as body type? Why?a type of serif because it is best used for magazines, books, and you want to be able to read it.

Identify the lowercase characters that have ascenders? b,d,h,k,l,t,f

Identify the lowercase characters that have descenders? f,g,j,p,q,t


first font:
because it is very uniform 
second font:
i think it is script because it is cursivey and curvy like script! it sort of resembles handwriting.
third font:
decorative because it is very... well... decorative. it is something you would use maybe if you are typing stuff for a scrapbook, or if you want to decorate.
fourth font:
slab serif, because it is still very uniform but it is more blocky and chunky letters.
fifth font:
decorative as well, it looks sort of like a circus theme. it is not something you would use if you were trying to be serious and if you had to make it small for people to read, it would be almost impossible.
sixth font:
serif, it has the little things that come off it.
seventh font:
serif, it is not as formal as a sans serif, but still very readable and it has the little things that come off it.
Define typography? using type you select as a designer and making them into a design. Its an art.

What does typography involve?  line spacing, font, letter spacing

What is a typeface? distinct designs and fonts of the letters

What is another term for typeface? font

What is a character? each letter within the font

What is type style? bold, italic, regular, underline

What does type style "create" within a design? variety and visual interest. it separates things

What is the waist line and what does it indicate? the top of the lower case letters

What is a base line and what does it indicate? the bottom of the letters, where they all sit

What is an ascender? parts at the top

What is a descender? parts at the bottom

Describe a serif? curves that sort of come off of the font

How can the size of the typeface be identified? the point size that the font is. a way to measure type from the tops of the ascender to the bottom of the descender.

What is a point? smallest unit of measure. subdivision of a larger pica

How many points are in an inch? 72

What is a pica and how many are in an inch? 6 picas in an inch. it is the bigger.. points are parts of the pica.

How many points are in a pica? 12

What is body type and where can it be found? type sizes that range from 14 point type and smaller. magazines, papers, newspapers. a lot of text in one spot

What is the key to selecting appropriate typefaces to be used as body type? readability

What is display type and how is it used? larger things. headlines, sub headlines, anything that is one display. anything above 14 point type

What is reverse type and when would it be used? call attention to a message. consistent white type on a solid darker background. it calls your attention to it

What is a typeface classification? a way of categorizing different types into specific categories.

When was Blackletter invented and how was it used? earliest, came along with the invention of printing press. calligraphy fashion

Describer the characteristics of a Blackletter typeface? oriental elaborate thick and thin strokes. just like a calligraphy pen.

When was Old Style invneted and what was is based on? renaissance typographers, early 15's 16's

Describe the characteristics of an Old Style typeface? thick and thin elements

When were formal scripts developed? earlier, from actual handwriting

When were casual scripts developed? couple centuries later

Describe the characteristics of a Script typeface? very pretty and real handwriting

When was Modern typefaces developed and why? like old style but sharp thick and thin elements

Describe the characteristics of a Modern typeface? thick and thin elements

How early can Sans Serif typefaces be found? What happened? 
we had it and then it went away when renessance had its return to old style. the 1920's it came back.


When did they become popular? 1920s


Describe the characteristics of a Sans Serif typeface? very unform

When was Slab Serif developed and why? 1920 for advertisting

Describe the characteristics of a Slab Serif typeface? very square uniform strokes, blocky, big chunky sarifs

Describe Decorative typefaces? anything you can't fit into another classification

Why were they developed? for specific things or purposes

What are they best used for? for specific things

Review Week 13

Balance is used in this picture because it shows how different types of objects can be evened out or balanced in a picture. A larger dark object can be balanced by a small dark object. 








                                                                                
Gradation is shown in this picture by the objects going from dark to light and light to dark.





Repetition is used in this picture because the square shapes are repeating in a line and pattern. 




 


Variation is used in this picture and can be shown by the different types of squares used in the pattern.


Harmony is used in this picture because the colors used are across from each other on the color wheel and it is  visually satisfying.










 


Contrast is used in this picture because there is a big difference in the light and dark in the picture and the way the eye is drawn to two separate colors and lines. 









 Dominance is used in this picture because there is a distinct emphasis on the colored whipped cream and cherry. The back ground is black and white and the color pops and draws all of the viewers attention to it. 















Unity is used in this picture because all the shapes used are organic and free floating, they all are working together in the same way to create the overall message and appearance. 












How do you add a layer mask to a particular layer? You select the layer you want to add the mask to, then click the button that is a square with a circle inside. That creates a mask on the layer and then click the mask which is next to the layer.

What two colors are used to create the mask? Black and white

Describe the process of using a layer mask? It creates a second layer over the original picture so you can manipulate the picture any way you want.

Define typography?  Using type you select as a designer and rearranging them into a design. It is an art

Where did the word "typography" originate from? Greek language, from writing and type

What does typography involve?  Line spacing, font, letter spacing
What is a typeface? Distinct designs and fonts of the letters and characters

What is another term for typeface?  

What is a character? 

What is type style? Bold, italic and regular fonts

What does type style "create" within a design? adds variety and different views of fonts to draw attention to certain areas

What kind of art/design does he produce? photocollages

This was published in The Boston Global on December 20, 2009
This was published on Nickelodeon as a short animation clip. The design principle of repetition was used and there is a feeling of being one and unity. Different  proportion was used between the objects. The variety of the different principles use help to make the picture feel whole by using a lot of different objects to make it that way. There is a background and figures.

Review Week 12

How can you, as the designer, use principles of design to help compose a page?  You can use them to make sure all the correct basics are used, and they can make sure your page is the best that it can be. They can also make sure that your message is displayed the best that it can be communicated.

What are the principles of design (define each in your own words)? Balance which is how the objects are laid out on the page. Gradation which is the way light is perceived on an object making it darker or lighter. Repetition which is the amount of times an object or theme is presented. Contrast which is the amount of difference seen in a design. Harmony which is all the design working together to create an overall satisfaction to the audience. Dominance which is one object taking more attention over another. Unity which is making sure all the elements come together to help make the bigger picture of the whole design.

The title of this artwork is called Marilyn 1962. The color scheme Andy Warhol used in this image is Complementary color scheme. Colors that are opposite of each other on the color wheel. In this image all the colors and lines are simple and clean.





This image is titled banana and uses a primary color scheme. Only red and yellow are used which are both primary colors. In this artwork negative and positive space are used to create the image.

Review Week 8

Why must designers pay close attention to how color is utilized within a composition? To make sure the overall design of the work looks good and flows well together

Why is the color wheel an important tool for graphic designers? To see what colors compliment or don't compliment each other

Find an example of neutral colors utilized within a design (hint: google poster design). Near the sample, discuss why you feel the designer included neutral colors within the composition. 
The neutral colors used in the background and majority of the poster add a simple and effective statement. It helps compliment the simplicity of the product and make an emphasis on the red dress.





Briefly describe how we "see" the color of an object?
The colors of the light are seen through our eyes and processed in out brains. It is the light reflecting off the color.






Steve Jobs

Who is Steve Jobs? He was an American inventor and entrepreneur. He was co-founder, chairman, and chief executive officer of Apple Inc. 

What company was he CEO for many years? Pixar and Apple Inc.

What did he do for the computer industry? His innovative and creative ideas of what a personal computer should be led him to revolutionize and change the computer hardware and software industry
How did this man impact the graphic design industry?
He worked with many great graphic designers and allowed a type of freedom and creativity with the designs of Apple. He also had a great appreciation for graphic design and allowed designers to be successful and "flourish".

Podcast #2 Color Theory

The right use of color can do what? maximize productivity, minimize visual fatigue, and relax the whole body.

Within the electromagnetic spectrum, which waves allow us to see color? visible light

Describe white light? equal parts of all color in the visible spectrum.

How do we see color if objects "have no color of their own"? objects appear to be in color when the absorb or reflect colors in the visible spectrum. reflected color is the color we see.

What is a glass prism? a transparent, triangular object that breaks white light into all the visible colors in the spectrum. all colors can be see when refracted through a glass prism.

What seven colors result when white light is refracted through a prism? red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, and violet

Describe hue? hue is the color itself. each different hue is a different reflected wavelength of light.

When does white light occur? when all the wavelengths are reflected back to your eye.

When does black light occur? when no light is reflected back to your eye.

How color is perceived depends on what? the type of light that it is seen with, incandescent, fluorescent, or natural light. colors can change according to their surroundings.

What is a color wheel? shows different results of mixing colors

What are primary colors? Name them? red, yellow, blue. no colors can be mixed to make these colors. they are our 3 basic colors

What are secondary colors? Name them? orange, green, violet. 2 primary colors are mixed to make these.

What are tertiary colors? Name them? primary and secondary colors mixed together. red-orange, yellow-orange, yellow-green, blue-green, blue-biolet, and red-violet. primary color is named first

What are neutral colors? How can they be created? colors that dont show up on the color wheel. almost gray. very low saturations. blacks, grays, whites, and brown. complimentary color pair mixed.

How can a neutral color help a design? help put the focus on other colors or tone down colors that are emphasized on their own.

What are complementary colors? Name them? colors that are positioned opposite of each other. red and green, orange and blue, yellow and violet.

What is color value? the lightness or darkness of a color

What is a shade? adding black to a hue produces a low-value color

What is a tint? adding white to a hue produces a high-value color

What is saturation/intensity? the brightness of a color. full intensity when not mixed with black and white. you can change the intensity of a color by adding gray.

What happens when you mix complementary colors together? you produce a dull tone, when you put them side by side it increases the intensity

Describe color harmony? pleasing to the eye, engages the view, and a balance or order to the visual

What is a color scheme? harmonious color combinations. colors that are used to create style and appeal. based on the color wheel and the arrangement of color.

Describe a monochromatic color scheme? uses variations of tints or shades of one color. clean and elegant. go well together for a soothing affect. very easy on the eyes

Describe an analogous color scheme? 3 colors that are adjacent to each other on the color wheel. one color is dominant and the other two enrich the scheme. often found in nature and pleasing to the eye. bright and cheery effect. can accommodate changing moods.

Describe a complementary color scheme? two colors that are opposite of each other the color wheel. draws a lot of attention, high contrast composition. seen in nature.

Describe a split-complementary color scheme? uses a color and its 2 colors adjacent to its complimentary color. will draw attention, but without the tension of a complimentary color scheme.

Describe a triadic color scheme? 3 colors equally spaced around the color wheel. strong visual balance

What colors are considered to be warm colors? yellows, oranges, and reds

Describe a warm color scheme? bold and energetic. appear closer, so do not overwhelm. needs to pop out, consider using warm colors in the design.

What colors are considered to be cool colors? greens, blues, and violets.

Describe a cool color scheme? an impression of calm, rarely overpowers the main concept, appear farther away. give an allusion of depth

Why is important to consider which colors are being used within a design? impacts all of our visual communications. the right tone and message. the right response. creates an emotional reaction.
